This State Opens Up Applications for Affordable Housing Program

In Helena, Montana, people who need help paying for their homes can now sign up for a program called Housing Choice Vouchers, often known as Section 8. This program was closed in August 2024, but it's open again.

This program is for families with very low incomes, older adults, and people with disabilities. It helps them pay for their homes by covering part of the rent. If you get help from this program, you usually pay about 30% of your monthly income (after taxes) for rent and bills.

The good news is Montana has won a big decision with the government that means the amount of rent help from the vouchers will be closer to what houses really cost in Montana.

Before, the vouchers couldn't cover enough rent due to the rising costs of homes in the state.

Michael O'Neil, who's in charge of Helena's housing program, mentioned that it's hard for people to stay in a community if they can't afford a home there. He said there are more people without homes, some even living in cars. He hopes this voucher program can help fix some of these big problems.

If you've been waiting for help, you should make sure your details are still correct. If you don't know if you can get this help, you should talk to your local housing office.

For people in Lewis and Clark County, that means reaching out to the Helena Housing Authority.

You can learn more about how to apply for the voucher program online.
