Summer Cooling Help for Low-Income Families Available in Several States in August 2025

In August 2025, financial support for cooling costs during the hot summer months is available to low-income families in several states through the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP).

This help can vary from state to state; some provide money towards utility bills while others might offer air conditioning units or fix existing ones.

By helping to ease some of the money troubles associated with cooling homes, these programs help make life more manageable for people struggling with high housing costs.

Here's a list of some states providing cooling assistance and details about their programs:

  • Alabama: Families can apply until September 30, 2025. Help ranges from $320 to $520, based on family income.
  • Arizona: Assistance is available until October or November, depending on the county. Help can range from $160 to $1,200.
  • California: Offers year-round assistance, with amounts ranging from $288 to $990.
  • District of Columbia: Also offers year-round help, with grants from $250 to $1,800.
  • Florida: The program runs until the end of September 2025, providing aid from $400 to $1,350.
  • Nebraska: From June 1 to August 31, assistance includes payments and possibly help with AC repairs, with support up to $750.
  • Oklahoma: Accepted applications from July 15, 2025, and continues while funds are available.
  • Georgia: Although the official program ended on July 31, some local agencies might still help early in August.

Other states like Nevada, New Mexico, Tennessee, Utah, Washington, West Virginia, Delaware, Louisiana, New York, Kentucky, Mississippi, South Carolina, and Texas also have ongoing summer cooling programs through August.

Some states like Illinois will accept applications until August 15, 2025, or as long as the budget lasts, providing cooling grants to those who qualify.

To apply, residents should contact their local LIHEAP office or Community Action Agency to check the current application period and eligibility criteria.

Funds are limited and given on a first-come, first-served basis. Applicants usually need to provide recent utility bills, income proof, ID, and proof of where they live.
