Texas Grants $6.1M to Support San Antonio Veterans

Governor Greg Abbott recently announced over $6.1 million in state grants to help veterans and their families in the San Antonio and South-Central Texas regions.

The funding, provided through the Texas Veterans Commission’s (TVC) Funds for Veterans' Assistance program, will support 24 regional organizations and is expected to reach more than 100,000 local veterans.

The grants will fund various essential community services, including emergency financial support, housing repairs, free meals, counseling, legal support, and transportation.
 

Key grant recipients and programs include:

• Housing & Home Repairs: Operation Finally Home ($375,000), Meals on Wheels San Antonio ($300,000), and the Alamo Area Council of Governments ($275,000) received funds for home modifications to help veterans live comfortably and securely.
• Financial Assistance: Several groups—including Catholic Charities Archdiocese of San Antonio, Community Council of South-Central Texas, and The Salvation Army San Antonio—received $300,000 each to provide direct financial aid to veterans in need.
• Counseling & Mental Health: West Texas Counseling & Guidance ($400,000), Family Endeavors ($300,000), and Catholic Charities ($175,000) received funding to offer clinical counseling services.
• Food & Meal Programs: Funding was awarded to Meals on Wheels San Antonio ($300,000), Honor Veterans Now ($250,000), and Soldiers’ Angels ($222,000) to support meal delivery and hunger relief.
• Medical Equipment & Healthcare Services: Project MEND received $400,000 to provide medical equipment and adaptive technology, while San Antonio Food Bank ($300,000) and San Antonio Coalition for Veterans and Families ($73,000) received support specifically for homeless veterans.
• Veterans Treatment Courts: Bexar County ($669,000 total across two court divisions), Comal County ($235,000), Guadalupe County ($110,000), and Tom Green County ($45,000) were granted funds to maintain court programs designed to help veterans involved in the legal system get rehabilitation and support.

These regional awards are part of a broader statewide push by the TVC, which awarded more than $40.8 million to 160 non-profit organizations and local government agencies across Texas earlier this year.
