The Biden-Harris administration has just given out $10 million to help people who don't earn a lot of money and live in certain rented homes learn more about their rights and how to speak up for themselves. This money goes to places where people are living with the help of a program called Section 8, which helps pay for their rent.
This big chunk of money is meant to teach these renters how to better communicate with the people who manage or own the buildings they live in.
This is so they can make sure their homes are safe, nice to live in, and don’t cost too much money. Part of this money will also help set up groups led by tenants so they can work together and support each other.
The government, under President Biden and Vice President Harris, wants to make sure that people who rent their homes can have a say in things and live comfortably and affordably. They talked about this plan as part of a bigger idea to make sure renters are treated fairly and have good places to live.
Acting Secretary of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Adrianne Todman said they are really focused on helping families live in better homes. They want to listen to groups of renters and help them be part of making changes to keep housing affordable.
Julia Gordon, who helps lead housing efforts for the government, talked about how important it is to support renters so they can have good homes. This new funding will go to groups that stand up for renters, making sure their homes are up to par.
The money is being given out by HUD’s Tenant Education Outreach Program. Two organizations, the AIDS Healthcare Foundation and the Massachusetts Alliance of HUD Tenants, will oversee this.
They will give money to around 30 groups that help renters, on a first-come, first-served basis. This will help strengthen the groups of renters to work together in making their living conditions better.
